Do I need academic qualifications to start a career in hairdressing?

Although not compulsory, ideally you would have achieved GCSEs in English and Maths. When you join our academy you will continue to receive support with your English and Maths, whatever grades you have achieved. We aspire that all our learners work towards improving their English and Maths whilst attending their course with us.

How long does it take to become a fully qualified hairdresser?

It will take 18 months – two years to be a fully qualified hairdresser. This may include some time as a trainee prior to starting your apprenticeship.

Do I have to pay any fees?

If you are completing an Intermediate or Advanced Apprenticeship or Study Programme then you will not pay a fee.

If you are an adult over 19 years old and not qualified to level 2 or in receipt of a means-tested benefit then you will not pay a fee.

If you are an adult over 19 years old and already have a level 2 qualification in another subject and not in receipt of a means-tested benefit you may be required to pay a fee

Can you start a career in hairdressing at any age?

To start learning at Central you must be over the school leaving age for year 11. There is no upper limit on age when starting hairdressing – everyone is welcome.

Do I have to pay a penalty if I change my mind?

You do not pay a penalty if you change your mind but if you have already paid fees they are non-refundable.

Will I earn any money while I'm training?

If you are completing work experience on a traineeship then you will be reimbursed for expenses and employers are encouraged to pay for your lunches. If you are completing an apprenticeship then you will be employed and paid at least the minimum apprenticeship wage.

If you are completing a Study or Adult Programme you will not be paid to train.

Do I have to sit a written examination or test?

Yes, you will be required to sit an initial assessment test in English and Maths. Once on the course you will complete online tests in hairdressing and/or barbering.

Do I have to buy any equipment?

If you are completing a study or adult programme you will require an equipment pack that will cost around £150. If you are an apprentice equipment is provided at college but you are encouraged to also purchase your own kit.
